The Mahindra XUV 7XO range starts with the AX and extends to the AX7L. The base AX is unusually well equipped for an entry variant, while the AX7L adds luxury, driver-assistance technology and the option of diesel all-wheel drive. The right choice depends less on engine performance and more on how much premium equipment you will actually use.

XUV 7XO base vs top: price difference

Mahindra currently lists the AX petrol manual at ₹13.99 lakh ex-showroom. At the other end, the AX7L diesel automatic AWD is listed at ₹25.94 lakh. The AX7L is also offered in other seating and powertrain combinations, so the exact premium depends on the version you compare.

Variant Representative ex-showroom price Position in range
AX petrol manual, 7-seat ₹13.99 lakh Base variant
AX7L petrol automatic, 7-seat ₹24.29 lakh Top petrol variant
AX7L diesel automatic AWD ₹25.94 lakh Flagship variant

These are ex-showroom prices checked on 25 October 2026. Registration, insurance, accessories and city-specific charges are extra.

What does the base AX include?

The AX does not look or feel like a bare-bones trim. It has LED lighting, a coast-to-coast triple-screen layout, wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, connected-car technology, cruise control, push-button start and six airbags. Mahindra also lists 75 standard safety features across the range.

The compromises are easier to see in the wheels, upholstery and convenience equipment. The base car uses 17-inch steel wheels and misses the richer cabin materials, powered seats, premium audio, advanced cameras and ADAS functions offered higher in the range.

What does the AX7L add?

The AX7L is aimed at buyers who want the complete XUV 7XO experience. Depending on the selected powertrain and seating layout, it adds premium upholstery, powered and ventilated seating, a panoramic sunroof, multi-zone ambient lighting, a Harman Kardon audio system, additional connected features and a more extensive camera system.

Higher variants from AX7 upward have seven airbags, including extended curtain protection for the third row. The AX7L also brings Level 2 ADAS functions and is available with diesel automatic AWD. ADAS assists the driver; it does not replace attentive driving.

AX vs AX7L: key differences

Area AX base AX7L top

Airbags Six Seven, including extended curtain protection
Upholstery Fabric-focused cabin Premium leatherette trim
Front seats Manual adjustment Powered and ventilated, depending on configuration
ADAS No Level 2 driver-assistance features

Drivetrain Front-wheel drive FWD; diesel automatic AWD available
Wheels 17-inch steel wheels Premium alloy wheels

Engine and gearbox choices

The XUV 7XO continues with a 2.0-litre turbo-petrol and a 2.2-litre turbo-diesel. The petrol produces up to 203 PS and 380 Nm. Diesel torque varies by transmission, reaching 450 Nm with the automatic. Both engines are offered with six-speed transmissions, while AWD is reserved for selected diesel automatic variants.

Which XUV 7XO variant should you buy?

Choose the AX if your priority is maximum space, strong engines, essential safety and the headline screen package at the lowest possible price. It is the rational choice for buyers who can live without a panoramic sunroof, ADAS, premium seats and AWD.

Choose the AX7L if this will be a long-term family SUV and you specifically want the premium cabin, advanced cameras, Level 2 ADAS, ventilated seats or diesel AWD. The price gap is substantial, so buyers who want a balance rather than either extreme should also compare the middle AX5 and AX7 variants.
