MG Motor India has stopped selling the Astor. That is what MG dealers told Autocar India on 16 October 2026. Rushlane, Autocar Professional and Aaj Tak have reported the same news since then. MG itself has not said anything yet. The Astor is still listed on MG's website, with prices from ₹9.79 lakh.

The Astor came to India in 2021. It was a mid-size SUV with a lot of features for its price. But buyers never really took to it. Here is what went wrong, what it means if you own one, and what MG plans to do next.

What is the MG Astor?

The Astor is a five-seat SUV. It is 4,323 mm long and has a 2,585 mm wheelbase. It sits in the same class as the Hyundai Creta, Kia Seltos, Skoda Kushaq and Volkswagen Taigun.

In 2021, MG gave it things that were rare in this class. It had Level 2 ADAS and a personal AI assistant on the dashboard. MG's website also lists six airbags, a 360-degree camera, a panoramic sunroof and a 10.1-inch touchscreen. Our MG Astor review tells you how it felt to live with.

MG Astor What MG lists today
Engine 1.5-litre petrol, 4 cylinders
Power and torque 110 PS and 144 Nm
Gearbox 5-speed manual or CVT automatic
Fuel tank 48 litres
Length and wheelbase 4,323 mm and 2,585 mm
Variants Sprint, Shine, Select, Sharp Pro, Savvy Pro
Price (ex-showroom) ₹9.79 lakh to ₹15.30 lakh

Why did MG stop the Astor?

The short answer is poor sales. Autocar India says the Astor sold just 112 units a month on average from September 2025 to September 2026. Rushlane counted January to September 2026. It found 1,715 units in nine months. That is about 191 a month. The two counts are not the same, but both are very small.

Sales did pick up in the last few months. Rushlane says the Astor sold 720 units in August and 284 in September. Now look at its rivals over the same nine months.

SUV Sales, January to September 2026
Hyundai Creta 1,43,424
Kia Seltos 99,655
Honda Elevate 13,996
Skoda Kushaq 9,945
Volkswagen Taigun 9,559
MG Astor 1,715

The gap is huge. On average, the Creta sold more cars every week than the Astor sold in nine months. Even the smaller rivals sold more than five times as many.

One engine was not enough

Most reports point to the engine choice as the main problem. At launch, the Astor had two petrol engines. One was a 1.5-litre with 110 hp. The other was a 1.3-litre turbo with 140 hp. MG dropped the turbo in February 2025, says Autocar India.

After that, buyers got only one engine. Rivals now offer petrol, diesel, CNG and hybrid choices. The Creta even has an electric version. The Astor had no diesel, no CNG and no hybrid.

The look may have hurt too. Autocar India says the Astor sits low, more like a crossover. Next to a tall and boxy Creta, it looked smaller. The ZS EV is the electric twin of the Astor, but it costs a lot more.

I own an Astor. What now?

Do not worry too much. MG has not made any official statement yet. Its website still shows the Astor, and its service pages still list the car. Your warranty is a deal you already made with MG when you bought the car. Keep your papers safe and keep servicing it at MG workshops.

One thing may change. A model that is no longer sold often fetches less when you sell it. That is our view, not MG's. If you plan to sell soon, get quotes from a few used-car buyers first.

Can you still buy a new Astor?

Some dealers may still have new cars in stock. MG's website still shows a booking link for it. If you find one, ask for a good discount and check the month it was made. Also think about resale. A new MG SUV is coming, and the Astor will look old next to it.

What comes next: a new MG SUV in 2027

MG is not leaving this class. Autocar India first reported in March 2026 that a replacement is on the way. It is expected to use a new base called SIGMA. That stands for SAIC Intelligent Global Modular Architecture. SAIC is the Chinese company behind MG.

SIGMA can take petrol, hybrid and fully electric power. So the new SUV could come with more than one type of engine. That would fix the Astor's biggest weakness. Abroad, the MG One SUV already uses this base.

Reports say the new SUV may replace the ZS EV as well. Its launch is expected in 2027. MG has not confirmed its name, engines, price or launch date. Treat all of this as expected for now.

MG has been busy with other cars. Its line-up now has the Hector Tomahawk EV, the Hector Tomahawk PHEV and the large Majestor SUV. Our Hector Tomahawk price guide explains how its battery rental plan works.

What else can you buy instead?

If the Astor was on your list, you have plenty of other choices. The Creta is the top seller in this class. The Seltos, Honda Elevate, Kushaq and Taigun are good options too. If you want low fuel bills and can spend more, the new Renault Duster hybrid starts at ₹16.99 lakh.

Our take

The Astor was a good car in many ways. It was full of features and felt nice inside. But Indian buyers want a choice of engines. One petrol engine could not fight rivals that offer many more choices. MG seems to know this, and its next SUV is being planned with more choice. If MG gets the price right, 2027 could be a very different story.

We will update this story if MG confirms the news or shares details of the new SUV. You can still find the full details of the car on our MG Astor page.
