The ₹13.99 lakh figure you see on MG Hector Tomahawk ads is not the price of the car. It is the price of the car without its battery, with the battery rented at ₹4.90 for every kilometre you drive. That distinction matters more now that the EV has crossed 10,000 bookings: MG's sales head, Lakshmi Ram Kumar Subbaraj, told carandbike and ETAuto on 13 October that demand is strong across Tier-1, 2 and 3 cities, and ETAuto reports that MG hinted at delivery lead times beyond eight weeks. So which way of paying actually costs less?

Hector Tomahawk price: full vs BaaS

JSW MG Motor launched the Hector Tomahawk on 26 August in two forms: an EV and a plug-in hybrid (PHEV). Both can be bought outright or with Battery-as-a-Service (BaaS). MG's release gives the starting BaaS prices only; the other BaaS prices below come from Autocar India's tables, so treat them as reported.

Variant Seats Full ex-showroom BaaS price Battery rental
EV Excite 7 ₹19.49 lakh ₹13.99 lakh ₹4.90/km
EV Exclusive 7 ₹21.99 lakh ₹15.99 lakh ₹4.90/km
EV Essence 5 ₹22.99 lakh ₹16.99 lakh ₹4.90/km
EV Essence 7 ₹23.49 lakh ₹17.49 lakh ₹4.90/km
PHEV Exclusive 7 ₹25.69 lakh ₹21.79 lakh ₹3.20/km
PHEV Essence 7 ₹27.79 lakh ₹23.89 lakh ₹3.20/km

All prices are introductory ex-showroom. MG says the BaaS rate is offered "for a limited number of bookings", so the ₹4.90 and ₹3.20 per km are not guaranteed for everyone.

When does the rental overtake the saving?

Start with a buyer paying cash. Going BaaS on the EV saves ₹5.5 lakh on the Excite and ₹6 lakh on the higher trims. At ₹4.90 a km, that saving is used up after about 1.12 lakh km on the Excite and 1.22 lakh km on the others. For the PHEV, the ₹3.9 lakh saving lasts about 1.22 lakh km at ₹3.20 a km.

Yearly driving EV Excite EV Exclusive / Essence PHEV
10,000 km 11.2 years 12.2 years 12.2 years
15,000 km 7.5 years 8.2 years 8.1 years
20,000 km 5.6 years 6.1 years 6.1 years

So a cash buyer who drives 20,000 km a year and keeps the car for ten years would be better off paying full price. Most owners change cars well before they reach those distances. Add a loan and the picture tilts further towards BaaS. Illustration only, using 9% over five years, not a quote: borrowing the extra ₹5.5 lakh for the EV's battery would cost about ₹11,400 a month. The BaaS rental at 1,500 km a month is ₹7,350, and it only matches that EMI at around 2,330 km a month. For the PHEV, the same maths gives an EMI of about ₹8,100 against a rental of ₹4,800 at 1,500 km a month.

The fine print

MG's Tomahawk pages do not publish the BaaS contract terms. MG's FAQ for the Windsor EV's BaaS programme, the closest published guide, says each finance partner sets its own plan, that some charge only for actual kilometres tracked by a telematics device and others impose a 1,500 km monthly minimum, and that the rental covers both principal and interest. Windsor's scheme is separate, so confirm the Tomahawk terms with the partner. Spinny reports that most MG finance partners work to the 1,500 km minimum, which means ₹7,350 a month on the EV even if you drive less. Spinny also points out that registration, insurance and TCS are calculated on the full value of the car, so BaaS lowers your down payment, not your taxes. Charging is separate.

Ask your dealer for the partner's exit terms, the minimum-running clause and what happens at resale before you sign. MG offers a lifetime battery warranty to the first owner; Spinny says second owners get 8 years or 1.6 lakh km.

Both get six airbags, Level 2 ADAS, a 360-degree camera, a 15.6-inch screen on the top trims and vehicle-to-home power. Neither has a Bharat NCAP rating yet; MG says one will follow once certified. The range and fuel figures are MG's claims, certified under ARAI/MIDC conditions, and real-world numbers will be lower.

Who should pick what

If you drive 1,000 to 1,500 km a month and mostly stay in the city, the EV on BaaS is the cheaper route, and the lower down payment is real money. If you do long highway runs and want one car for everything, the PHEV's 1,100 km combined range is the argument, but wait for the November deliveries and real-world tests. Heavy drivers who can pay cash should run the break-even above before assuming the cheaper sticker wins. Specs and variants are on our Hector Tomahawk EV page, and buyers who want a smaller MG with its own battery-rental plan can look at the Windsor EV.
