Two of India's most talked-about SUV badges are about to share a skeleton. On 12 October 2026, Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles (TMPV) and Stellantis signed a Definitive Agreement under which Stellantis gets access to Tata's vehicle architecture. The first product, according to the joint statement as reported by Economic Times, is a new Jeep SUV on the ARGOS platform that underpins the Tata Sierra. The companies have not named the car, shown it or priced it. Here is what is solid, and what is only a report.

What Is ARGOS, and Why Jeep Wants It

ARGOS stands for All-Terrain Ready, Omni-Energy and Geometry Scalable. It is Tata's modular architecture, designed to take different vehicle sizes and different powertrains. The Sierra, launched on 25 November 2025 at an introductory price starting ₹11.49 lakh, is the car that underpins it. We covered the demand side in Sierra crosses 1 lakh bookings and the waiting-period story, and the cars are built at Sanand, as in our first rollout report.

For Jeep, the logic is simple. Autocar India notes that the brand has been relegated to the fringes for lack of new products, and that a licensed platform with multiple powertrains and 4x4 capability could let Jeep add models faster than building a platform from scratch. Stellantis first mentioned a Tata-based Jeep at its Investor Day on 21 May 2026. Autocar India also reports a Stellantis ambition of selling 100,000 locally produced vehicles globally in 2028 across its Tata and Dongfeng programmes.

Jeep in India Today

The Ranjangaon plant currently makes the Jeep Compass and Meridian and assembles the Wrangler and Grand Cherokee, according to Overdrive. If you are looking at a Jeep right now, the range is the Jeep Compass and the three-row Jeep Meridian, with the latest update covered in our Meridian Track Edition story. A Sierra-based Jeep is more than a year away on current reports, so it should not change your buying plan for 2026.

What It Means for Buyers

  • Sierra owners and buyers: no change. The Sierra stays a Tata product. See the model page for Tata Sierra prices and variants.
  • Jeep fans: a more affordable Jeep is the likely upside, but the companies have not said it will be cheaper than the Compass.
  • EV watchers: the Sierra electric is a separate story. Our Sierra EV launch report has the timeline.

Bottom Line

This is a platform-sharing deal that proves Tata's engineering is good enough to be licensed to a global group. For buyers, the first visible result is still years away. Until Tata or Stellantis puts out a name, a design and a date, everything beyond the signed agreement should be read as a report.
