Renault has launched the Duster hybrid in India. The price starts at ₹16.99 lakh, ex-showroom. That is an introductory price. The car is called the Duster Strong Hybrid E-Tech 160. It is the first hybrid that Renault sells in India. Renault says it runs 29 km on a litre in the ARAI test.
Renault Duster hybrid price in India
Renault sells the hybrid in three trims. These are the introductory prices, all ex-showroom.
| Trim | Ex-showroom price | Main extras |
|---|---|---|
| Evolution | ₹16.99 lakh | 10.1-inch screen, cruise control, 18-inch wheels |
| Techno | ₹18.99 lakh | Panoramic sunroof, full LED headlamps, push-button start |
| Emotion | ₹19.49 lakh | Ventilated front seats, powered tailgate, bigger driver display |
The Techno costs ₹2 lakh more than the Evolution. The Emotion costs ₹50,000 more than the Techno. Carhp reports that dual-tone paint costs ₹20,000 extra.
Most reports say the introductory prices hold for deliveries until 31 December 2026. Carhp says bookings instead. Ask your dealer before you pay. Bookings are open at ₹21,000. Deliveries start on 6 November, say Autocar Professional and Fortune India. Owners in Renault's R-Pass group get priority. Renault has not shared on-road prices. They will change from city to city.
How the Duster hybrid works
The engine is a 1.8-litre petrol with four cylinders. It makes 110 PS. Two electric motors help it. One is a starter-generator. The other is a traction motor with 50 PS and 208 Nm. Together the system makes 160 PS.
The battery is small, at 1.4 kWh. You never plug it in. It charges as you drive and brake. The gearbox is called a multi-mode automatic. It has two electric gears and four petrol gears. The car starts in electric mode. The petrol engine joins in when it is needed.
Renault says up to 80 percent of city driving can happen on electric power. That depends on traffic and how you drive. Renault also claims 0 to 100 kmph in 9.61 seconds. The fuel tank holds 50 litres. Renault claims a range of over 1,400 km.
Duster hybrid mileage
The ARAI figure is 29 kmpl. ARAI tests cars in a lab, so real roads give less. Expect a lower number in daily use. Renault also says the hybrid uses up to 29 percent less fuel than a diesel SUV. The new Duster has no diesel, so that is Renault's own comparison.
Rivals are close on paper. The Maruti Victoris strong hybrid is rated at 28.65 kmpl. The Grand Vitara strong hybrid is rated at 27.97 kmpl. The Duster leads by a small margin. That gap alone should not decide your buy.
Features and boot space
The base Evolution has a 10.1-inch touchscreen, dual-zone climate control, cruise control and 18-inch wheels. The Techno adds an electric panoramic sunroof, full LED headlamps and push-button start with a hands-free card. It also gets the MyRenault connected car app.
The Emotion adds a 10.25-inch driver display and ventilated front seats with 6-way power adjustment. It also gets a powered tailgate and brown leatherette seats. Renault says boot space is about 544 litres up to the roof and 372 litres under the parcel shelf. Ground clearance is 212 mm.
Safety on the Duster hybrid
Renault lists 38 standard safety features. They include six airbags, stability control, tyre pressure monitoring, hill start assist, a rear camera and rear parking sensors. One report counts 35 features. Renault's own brochure shows 38.
There is one gap. Autocar India says the hybrid has no ADAS and no 360-degree camera. The top turbo-petrol Duster has both. Bharat NCAP gave the turbo-petrol Duster 5 stars in April. We have not seen a separate test of the hybrid.
Duster hybrid against its rivals
The Duster hybrid takes on the Maruti Victoris, the Maruti Grand Vitara and the Toyota Urban Cruiser Hyryder. The Victoris strong hybrid starts at ₹16.42 lakh, says Fortune India. So the Duster costs a little more at the bottom. Top rival trims cost close to ₹20 lakh.
The Toyota system uses a 1.5-litre engine and a battery of about 0.6 kWh. Its output is about 116 PS, according to Autocar India and Carlelo. The Duster has 160 PS and a bigger 1.4 kWh battery. So it should feel quicker. Road tests will show how the three feel in daily use.
Warranty and ownership plan
Renault offers up to 7 years or 1.5 lakh km of warranty under its Forever programme, with conditions. The hybrid battery has its own cover of 8 years or 1.6 lakh km. Renault also sells an optional Protect 360 pack from ₹89,900. It bundles 3 years of comprehensive insurance and 3 years of scheduled service. It also promises a resale value of 60 percent after 3 years.
Our view
The hybrid is a smart move for Renault. SIAM data shows Duster dispatches fell from 2,359 in April to 406 in August, as Autocar Professional reports. Renault's India chief has said the limited engine choice held the car back. A hybrid at this price fixes part of that.
Our pick is the Techno at ₹18.99 lakh. It gets the sunroof, LED headlamps and push-button start. The Emotion adds only ₹50,000 for more comfort. Wait for a full road test before you trust the 29 kmpl figure. Bookings are open, and deliveries begin on 6 November. Not sure which trim to pick?
