Renault sells the new Duster hybrid in three trims. They are Evolution, Techno and Emotion. The gap between the cheapest and the dearest is ₹2.5 lakh. So which one should you pick? Here is how we see it after reading Renault's brochure and the launch reports.

What every Duster hybrid gets

All three trims share the same hybrid system. It has a 1.8-litre petrol engine and two electric motors. Together they make 160 PS. Renault claims 29 kmpl on the ARAI test.

Every trim also gets six airbags, a rear camera, cruise control and dual-zone climate control. The touchscreen is 10.1 inches. Ground clearance is 212 mm. The boot is about 544 litres up to the roof. So even the cheapest trim is not a stripped car.

All prices are introductory and ex-showroom.

Trim Price Seats Sunroof Headlamps Ventilated seats
Evolution ₹16.99 lakh Black upholstery No Not full LED No
Techno ₹18.99 lakh Beige semi-leatherette Yes Full LED No
Emotion ₹19.49 lakh Brown leatherette Yes Full LED Yes

Evolution at ₹16.99 lakh

The Evolution is the cheapest way into the hybrid. It rides on 18-inch flex wheels. It has LED tail lamps and the lit Duster grille. Inside you get black seats with grey stitching and a 7-inch driver display.

What you miss is the list that makes a car feel premium. There is no sunroof and no full LED headlamp. There is no push-button start. Autocar India says the Techno adds push-button start and the MyRenault connected app. So the Evolution does not have them. Renault's brochure also says stolen vehicle tracking is only for the Techno and Emotion.

This trim suits a buyer who cares most about fuel savings. It also suits someone who plans to keep the car for many years. It comes in only three colours. They are pearl white, moonlight silver and stealth black.

Techno at ₹18.99 lakh

The Techno costs ₹2 lakh more. For that money you get an electric panoramic sunroof and full LED headlamps. You also get push-button start with a hands-free card and the MyRenault app. The seats are desert beige semi-leatherette.

This is the trim we would pick. The extras are the ones you notice every day. The price also stays under ₹19 lakh. Renault says nearly half of the diesel SUVs in this class sell between ₹17 lakh and ₹20 lakh. The Techno sits right in that zone.

Emotion at ₹19.49 lakh

The Emotion costs only ₹50,000 more than the Techno. It adds a 10.25-inch driver display and a powered tailgate. The front seats are electric with 6-way adjustment and they are ventilated. The seats are dune brown leatherette. The 18-inch alloy wheels are diamond-cut.

The ventilated seats matter a lot in a hot city. The powered tailgate helps if you load bags often. If you can stretch your budget, the extra ₹50,000 buys real comfort. Still, many buyers will not use all of it.

What no Duster hybrid trim has

There is no ADAS on any hybrid trim. There is also no 360-degree camera. Autocar India says the top turbo-petrol Duster has both. The hybrid has a rear camera and rear parking sensors. Renault lists 38 standard safety features. If ADAS matters to you, test a turbo-petrol Duster as well.

Duster hybrid colours

The Techno and Emotion come in six single colours. They are pearl white, moonlight silver, stealth black, river blue, sunset red and mountain jade green. Dual-tone is also offered, paired with stealth black. It works with pearl white, river blue, sunset red and mountain jade green. Carhp reports that dual-tone costs ₹20,000 extra.

A rough fuel cost sum

These are our own rough sums, not a test result. Say you drive 15,000 km a year. Say petrol costs ₹100 a litre. At the claimed 29 kmpl you would burn about 517 litres. That is around ₹51,700 a year.

Real mileage is lower than the ARAI figure. If you get 22 kmpl, which is our guess, the same trip costs about ₹68,000. A road test will give us a true number.

Hybrid or turbo-petrol Duster?

The turbo-petrol Duster costs far less. Renault's price page showed it from ₹10.49 lakh on 16 October. The hybrid starts at ₹16.99 lakh. The 1.3-litre turbo makes 163 PS, so the hybrid is not ahead on power. What you pay extra for is fuel saving and quiet city driving.

In our view, city drivers should look at the hybrid. If you do long highway runs and want ADAS, the top turbo-petrol may suit you better.

Warranty and ownership cover

Renault gives up to 7 years or 1.5 lakh km of warranty under its Forever programme, with conditions. The hybrid battery has a separate cover of 8 years or 1.6 lakh km. Renault also sells an optional Protect 360 pack from ₹89,900. It covers 3 years of insurance and 3 years of service. It also promises a 60 percent resale value after 3 years.

Which Duster hybrid should you buy?

Take the Evolution if the price is your top worry. Take the Techno if you want the best value. Take the Emotion if you live somewhere hot or you load the boot every day. Bookings are open at ₹21,000. Deliveries start on 6 November, according to Autocar Professional and Fortune India. Renault says the introductory prices hold for deliveries until 31 December.
