Spy photos of the next Tata Nexon EV came out on 17 October. They show a battery pack and orange cables under a covered test car. We already told that story in our first spy report. This story is for the next question. Should you buy the Nexon EV today, or wait for the new one?
What is new and what is not
The new part is the photos. Rushlane reported them on 17 October. Other sites shared them on 17 and 18 October. They show an EV test car on a flatbed truck. They also show a flatter roof and a straighter tailgate.
Tata has said nothing. We found no word from Tata on launch date, battery size, range or price. Reports say the new Nexon will come in 2027. Some say mid-2027. The EV may arrive after the petrol car.
Rushlane adds a useful point. Tata is expected to launch the Safari EV and the Aeris EV first. It calls this unconfirmed. So the new Nexon EV looks like a car for late 2027 at the earliest. That is a guess from us.
The Nexon EV you can buy today
The current Nexon EV has two battery packs. The 30 kWh pack is called Medium Range. The 45 kWh pack is the bigger one. Tata's brochure gives the range as tested by ARAI. That is 275 km for the 30 kWh car and 489 km for the 45 kWh car.
Real roads give less. Tata's own estimate is 210 to 230 km for the 30 kWh car. For the 45 kWh car it is 350 to 375 km. Tata says the 45 kWh car can charge from 10 to 80 percent in 40 minutes. That needs a 60 kW fast charger. It also gets a lifetime battery warranty for the first owner, says Tata. The whole Nexon.ev line-up has a 5-star Bharat NCAP rating.
Rushlane lists a 325 km range for the smaller pack. Tata's brochure says 275 km. We use the brochure figure.

| Empowered 45 | 45 kWh | ₹16.34 lakh |

How rivals compare
Range numbers can fool you. Mahindra shows two numbers for the XUV 3XO EV in its brochure. One is 456 km. That is the MIDC Part 1 test only. The other is 351 km. That is MIDC Part 1 plus Part 2. The Nexon EV's 275 km and 489 km use the Part 1 plus Part 2 test. So 351 km is the fair number to set beside them. Mahindra also says up to 285 km in real use.
| Car | Ex-showroom price | Battery | Claimed range |
|---|---|---|---|
| Tata Nexon EV | ₹12.49 to ₹17.89 lakh | 30 or 45 kWh | 275 or 489 km |
| Mahindra XUV 3XO EV | ₹13.89 to ₹14.96 lakh | 39.4 kWh | 351 km |
| MG Windsor EV | ₹14.84 to ₹19.14 lakh | 37.9 or 52.9 kWh | 332 or 449 km |
| Hyundai Creta Electric | From ₹18.03 lakh | 42 or 51.4 kWh | 420 or 510 km |
Tata is the cheapest at the start. The Mahindra XUV 3XO EV costs more than the base Nexon EV and has one battery. The MG Windsor EV is a bigger car and costs more. The Hyundai Creta Electric starts higher still. The Windsor range uses the same test as the Nexon EV. Hyundai does not name the test on its price page, so treat the Creta Electric figures with care.
Should you wait?
Buy now if you need a car in the next six months. The current Nexon EV is a proven car. Tata calls it India's most sold EV. It comes at many price points and has a 5-star safety rating. Our real-world Nexon EV review shows how it behaves day to day.
Wait if you can hold off for a year or more. The new car has a new body. It may have a roomier cabin and newer tech. But Tata has not shown it. A new generation often costs more than the old one. That is only a guess. Nobody knows the price.
One more tip. If you do wait, watch the Safari EV and Aeris EV launches first. Tata is expected to bring them before the new Nexon EV. They will show what Tata does with price and tech. We will update this story if Tata shares real news.
