Mileage is one of the first things Indian buyers ask about, and the XUV 3XO has a slightly unusual line-up. Its diesel automatic is rated more efficient than the diesel manual, and the stronger TGDi petrol is rated better than the smaller turbo-petrol. This article compares the official ARAI figures with what owners report. For everything else about the car, see the XUV 3XO complete guide.

ARAI-certified mileage

Engine Gearbox ARAI mileage Range on 42 L (theoretical)
1.2 turbo-petrol (111 hp) 6MT 18.89 kmpl ~793 km
1.2 turbo-petrol (111 hp) 6AT 17.96 kmpl ~754 km
1.2 TGDi petrol (131 hp) 6MT 20.1 kmpl ~844 km
1.2 TGDi petrol (131 hp) 6AT 18.2 kmpl ~764 km
1.5 diesel (117 hp) 6MT 20.6 kmpl ~865 km
1.5 diesel (117 hp) 6AMT 21.2 kmpl ~890 km

We calculated the range by multiplying the ARAI figure by the 42-litre tank capacity. Real-world range will be lower.

Real-world mileage

ARAI tests are run in a lab under fixed conditions, so they are useful for comparing cars but optimistic for daily driving. Autocar India lists user-reported averages of about 15.86 kmpl for the petrol and 18.8 kmpl for the diesel. That is roughly 10 to 16 per cent below the ARAI numbers. In our experience, owners typically see:

  • Heavy city traffic: noticeably lower than average, especially with the petrol automatic.
  • Steady highway driving at 80-90 km/h: close to, or sometimes better than, the average figures.
  • Diesel: its torque means it loses less efficiency in traffic, which is why high-mileage drivers still prefer it.

These are general patterns rather than test results. Your numbers will depend on traffic, load, tyre pressure and AC use.

Why the TGDi beats the smaller petrol on paper

The TGDi engine uses direct injection, which burns fuel more precisely. Even though it makes more power (131 hp and 230 Nm), it is rated at 20.1 kmpl with the manual, compared with 18.89 kmpl for the 111 hp TCMPFi engine. In real driving the gap depends on how you drive, because buyers who choose the TGDi tend to use its extra performance.

How it compares with rivals

ARAI figures across the segment are close, and real-world economy mostly comes down to engine type. Diesels (3XO, Nexon, Venue, Sonet) are the most frugal. Naturally aspirated petrols such as the Brezza 1.5 are smooth but use more fuel in traffic. See XUV 3XO vs Nexon for a side-by-side comparison.

Tips to improve mileage

  1. Keep the tyres at the pressure printed on the door jamb and check them monthly.
  2. Save the sportier drive modes for when you actually need the extra performance.
  3. Drive smoothly. Turbo engines use much more fuel when you accelerate hard.
  4. Service on time. A clean air filter and the right oil grade make a difference.
  5. Don't carry extra weight in the boot.

Petrol, diesel or CNG for mileage?

If you drive more than about 1,500 km a month, the diesel's lower running cost starts to add up, as we show in XUV 3XO petrol vs diesel. The XUV 3XO CNG (ZNG), launched on October 15, has a certified 24.7 km/kg claim; real-world figures are not out yet. For running costs, see XUV 3XO EMI and ownership cost. For variant-wise figures, check the XUV 3XO product page.

Mileage by trim: which variants get which figure

Because mileage depends on the engine and gearbox, here is how the ARAI figures map to the trims:

Engine + gearbox Trims ARAI
1.2 TCMPFi MT MX1, REVX M, REVX M(O), REVX EDGE, REVX EDGE (O), AX5 18.89 kmpl
1.2 TCMPFi AT REVX M(O), REVX EDGE, REVX EDGE (O), AX5 17.96 kmpl
1.2 TGDi MT REVX A, AX5 L, AX7, AX7 L 20.1 kmpl
1.2 TGDi AT REVX A, AX5 L, AX7, AX7 L 18.2 kmpl
1.5 diesel MT MX2, REVX EDGE, REVX EDGE (O), AX5, AX7, AX7 L 20.6 kmpl
1.5 diesel AMT REVX EDGE (O), AX5, AX7 21.2 kmpl

Does E20 petrol affect mileage?

Autocar India lists the XUV 3XO petrol engines as E20 compatible, so they can safely run on the 20% ethanol blend now sold across India. Ethanol contains slightly less energy than petrol, and many owners of different cars report a small drop in fuel economy on E20. The size of the drop varies from car to car, so measure your own figures over a few tanks.

How to measure your real mileage

  1. Fill the tank to the first auto cut-off and reset the trip meter.
  2. Drive normally until the tank is at least half empty.
  3. Fill up again to the first cut-off and note the litres added.
  4. Divide the kilometres driven by the litres. Repeat over two or three tanks for a reliable average.

The trip computer is useful for trends, but tank-to-tank figures are more accurate.

Frequently asked questions

What is the ARAI mileage of the XUV 3XO petrol?

18.89 kmpl (MT) and 17.96 kmpl (AT) for the 1.2 turbo-petrol, and 20.1 kmpl (MT) and 18.2 kmpl (AT) for the 1.2 TGDi.

What is the ARAI mileage of the XUV 3XO diesel?
