The XUV 3XO offers three engines: a 1.2 turbo-petrol (TCMPFi), a more powerful 1.2 TGDi turbo-petrol and a 1.5 turbo-diesel. A CNG version, the XUV 3XO ZNG, launched on October 15 with the same 1.2 TCMPFi engine. Which one should you choose? This guide compares the three on performance, cost and how you drive. For the full model, see the XUV 3XO complete guide.

The three engines

  1.2 turbo-petrol (TCMPFi) 1.2 TGDi turbo-petrol 1.5 turbo-diesel
Power 82 kW (111 hp) @ 5,000 rpm 96 kW (131 hp) @ 5,000 rpm 85.8 kW (117 hp) @ 3,750 rpm
Torque 200 Nm @ 1,500-3,500 rpm 230 Nm @ 1,500-3,750 rpm 300 Nm @ 1,500-2,500 rpm
Gearbox 6-speed MT / 6-speed AT 6-speed MT / 6-speed AT 6-speed MT / 6-speed AMT (AutoSHIFT+)
ARAI mileage 18.89 kmpl (MT), 17.96 kmpl (AT) 20.1 kmpl (MT), 18.2 kmpl (AT) 20.6 kmpl (MT), 21.2 kmpl (AMT)

Price premium

For the same trim, the diesel costs more. For example, the AX5 diesel MT is Rs 11.39 lakh against Rs 10.30 lakh for the AX5 petrol MT, a difference of about Rs 1.09 lakh. On the REVX EDGE the diesel MT costs Rs 1.2 lakh more than the petrol MT.

Running cost: a worked example

This example assumes fuel at about Rs 95 per litre for petrol and Rs 88 for diesel, which is roughly Delhi pricing (check your local rates), and uses the user-reported averages from Autocar India (petrol about 15.9 kmpl, diesel about 18.8 kmpl).

  Petrol Diesel
Fuel cost per 1,000 km ~Rs 5,990 ~Rs 4,680
Per year at 15,000 km ~Rs 89,800 ~Rs 70,200
Yearly saving with diesel – ~Rs 19,600

At 15,000 km a year, it would take about 5.5 years to recover the Rs 1.09 lakh extra cost of the AX5 diesel through fuel savings alone. If you drive 25,000 km a year, that drops to about 3.3 years. These are estimates. Insurance, servicing and resale value also play a part, as we explain in XUV 3XO EMI and ownership cost.

Driving character

  • 1.2 TCMPFi petrol: easy and refined, and good for city-heavy use.
  • 1.2 TGDi petrol: the enthusiast's choice, with 230 Nm from 1,500 rpm. It comes on the REVX A, AX5 L, AX7 and AX7 L.
  • 1.5 diesel: 300 Nm of torque makes highway overtakes effortless, and it is the most frugal option.

Automatic choices

The petrol engines use a 6-speed torque-converter automatic, which is smooth in traffic. The diesel uses a 6-speed AMT, which is cheaper and slightly more efficient (21.2 kmpl ARAI) but less smooth when shifting.

Quick decision guide

You drive… Pick
Under 1,000 km a month, mostly city 1.2 TCMPFi petrol (MT or AT)
You enjoy driving and want performance 1.2 TGDi petrol
1,500+ km a month or lots of highway 1.5 diesel
Lowest running cost above all CNG (ZNG): claimed 24.7 km/kg, Rs 9.99-12.27 lakh

Resale and regulations

Diesel cars usually command a higher resale value in high-mileage markets. Keep in mind that Delhi-NCR restricts older diesel vehicles (10 years for diesel, compared with 15 years for petrol), which can reduce resale value there. If you live in the NCR, take this into account.

Maintenance considerations

Modern BS6 diesels use emission-control hardware that works best with regular highway runs. If your driving is mostly short city trips, a petrol is usually the easier engine to own. Turbo-petrols need good-quality fuel and on-time oil changes. Follow Mahindra's service schedule for either engine.

Performance and refinement

The diesel's 300 Nm makes it relaxed when loaded with family and luggage. The TGDi petrol is the more refined and sporty choice, and the TCMPFi is the sensible all-rounder. Test-drive them back to back if you can.

Frequently asked questions

Is the XUV 3XO diesel worth it?

It makes sense if you drive a lot. At 15,000 km a year, our estimate puts the diesel's extra cost at about 5 to 6 years to recover through fuel savings, but higher mileage shortens that.

Which XUV 3XO petrol engine is better?

The 1.2 TGDi (131 hp, 230 Nm) is quicker and has a higher ARAI rating. The 1.2 TCMPFi (111 hp) is cheaper and comes on more trims.

Does the diesel come with an automatic?

Yes, a 6-speed AMT (AutoSHIFT+) on the REVX EDGE (O), AX5 and AX7.

Should I choose the CNG?

If running costs matter most, the CNG (ZNG) is worth a look. Mahindra claims 24.7 km/kg with the same 82 kW and 200 Nm as petrol, and it costs about Rs 90,000 more than the matching petrol trims. Bookings open on October 20, and the boot shrinks to 270 litres.
