AEB is set to become mandatory in new cars in India. The road ministry has put out a draft rule for Autonomous Emergency Braking, or AEB. New car models will need it from 1 October 2030. Every new car built for sale will need it from 1 October 2032. Here is what the rule says, how AEB works, and which cars already have it today.
What does the new AEB rule say?
The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) has issued the draft as G.S.R. 904(E). It changes the Central Motor Vehicles Rules, 1989. The notice is dated 19 October 2026. It came out in the Gazette of India on 21 October, and the news broke on 22 October.
The AEB part covers M1 vehicles. These are passenger vehicles with up to eight seats plus the driver. That means hatchbacks, sedans, SUVs and MPVs.
This is still a draft. The public has 30 days to send comments, and the dates can change.
AEB mandatory dates: the full timeline
| Date | What the draft rule says |
|---|---|
| 1 Oct 2027 | Cars that have lane keeping, steering assist or a drowsiness alert must pass Indian tests (AIS-191, AIS-193, AIS-184). New models must meet the child seat rule for ISOFIX or i-Size (AIS-182). |
| 1 Apr 2028 | New models must pass a luggage holding test (IS 15546). |
| 1 Oct 2028 | Any car or small goods vehicle that has AEB must pass the Indian AEB test, AIS-185. All models must meet the child seat and luggage rules. |
| 1 Oct 2029 | Taxis and other passenger transport vehicles must have lane keeping, steering assist and a drowsiness alert. |
| 1 Oct 2030 | All new car models must have AEB. |
| 1 Oct 2032 | All car models must have AEB. |
In simple words, a car model launched after October 2030 must have AEB. Models already on sale get two more years.
What is AEB and how does it work?
AEB is a safety system that can brake the car on its own. It uses a radar, a camera or both to watch the road ahead. Say a car stops in front of you, or a person walks onto the road. The system first warns you with a beep and a light. If you still do not brake, it brakes for you.
Different brands use different names for it. Hyundai calls it Forward Collision-Avoidance Assist. Honda calls it Collision Mitigation Braking System. Most brands sell it as part of a Level 2 ADAS pack. New to ADAS? Read our easy guide, what is ADAS and how it keeps you safe.
AEB does not stop every crash. It works best on clear roads, in good light and at city speeds. Rain, fog, dirt on the sensor and sharp bends can make it act late, or not at all. The driver is always in charge. Think of it as a backup, not a self driving feature.
This official Hyundai video shows how it works.

Why is the government making AEB mandatory?
India sees a very high number of road deaths every year. The government wants to cut road crashes and deaths by half by 2030, as reported. Many crashes happen when a driver looks away for a second, or reacts too late. AEB is made for exactly these moments.
Trucks and buses come first. As reported, new truck and bus models are already set to get AEB from January 2027. Now cars will follow.
A good crash test score helps once a crash happens. AEB tries to stop the crash itself. Read why 5 star cars can still fail in real crashes.
Which cars in India already have AEB?
You do not have to wait till 2030. Many cars on sale today already offer AEB. It is mostly in the top variants. Some of them cost under Rs 10 lakh.
| Car | Variant with AEB | Price of that variant (ex-showroom) |
|---|---|---|
| Honda Amaze | ZX manual and CVT | From about Rs 9.39 lakh (reported) |
| Maruti Baleno | Alpha (O) manual and AMT | From Rs 9.50 lakh (intro price, reported) |
| Toyota Glanza | V(O) | Rs 10.49 lakh (intro price) |
| Tata Nexon | Fearless+ PS DCA petrol | About Rs 13.77 lakh (reported) |
| Hyundai Venue | HX10 turbo DCT and diesel AT | About Rs 14.68 lakh (reported) |
| Mahindra XUV 3XO | AX5 L turbo petrol and above | Check latest price |
| Honda City | V and above (reported) | Check latest price |
The Honda Amaze is one of the cheapest cars with AEB right now, going by reported prices. Its top ZX variant gets Honda SENSING, as per Honda. The Amaze also did well in crash tests. Read our Honda Amaze Bharat NCAP story.
The new Maruti Baleno facelift got Level 2 ADAS with AEB, as per Maruti. Only the top Alpha (O) variant has it. Its twin, the Toyota Glanza, also got ADAS in its V(O) grade. See our Glanza facelift launch story.
In SUVs, the Mahindra XUV 3XO offers AEB from the AX5 L variant. Mahindra says it can spot cars, people and cyclists. Read our XUV 3XO safety and ADAS guide. The Tata Nexon gets AEB only in the Fearless+ PS DCA petrol. The Hyundai Venue gets it in the top HX10 trim.
The Honda City also offers Honda SENSING from its V variant, as reported. Prices change often, so always check the latest list before you buy.
Will AEB make cars costlier?
Most likely, yes, by a bit. AEB needs a radar or a camera, plus software. Today it is mostly in top variants, but base variants will need it too. The government and carmakers have not shared any price figure yet. So any number you see now is a guess.
What else is in the draft rule?
AEB is the big headline, but the draft has more. Taxis and other passenger transport vehicles must get emergency lane keeping, steering assist and a drowsiness alert from October 2029. Child seat mounts and luggage holding also get new tests. The dates are in the table above.
Want to share your view? The draft asks people to send comments to MoRTH at comments-morth@gov.in. The window is 30 days from the date the gazette copies were made public.
Should you wait for AEB or buy a car now?
Buying a car this year? There is no need to wait for 2030. First pick a car with six airbags, ESC and a good crash test score. If your budget allows, a variant with AEB is worth it, mainly if you drive a lot on highways. Just remember that AEB is a helper. A calm and alert driver is still the best safety feature in any car.
