XUV 3XO engine line-up today

Engine Output Gearboxes CNG?
1.2L turbo-petrol MPFI 111hp / 200Nm 6MT, 6AT Yes, used for the CNG (ZNG)
1.2L turbo-petrol TGDi (direct injection) 131hp / 230Nm 6MT, 6AT No
1.5L turbo-diesel — MT, AT No
Electric (XUV 3XO EV) — — No

Petrol figures: Autocar India.

Why the MPFI engine?

In an MPFI engine, fuel is injected into the intake manifold, upstream of the cylinders. CNG systems also inject gas into the manifold, so an MPFI engine is cheaper and simpler to adapt. Doing the same with a direct-injection engine is more complex and costly (Autocar India).

CNG-mode power and torque

82 kW (about 110 bhp) and 200Nm, the same as in petrol mode. Mahindra says a revised turbocharger calibration and ECU mapping keep output identical on both fuels, and the 200Nm is available from 1,500 to 3,500 rpm. A 10-bar CNG injection system, which Mahindra calls a segment first, supports this. Mahindra also claims 0-60 km/h in 4.9 seconds and 0-100 km/h in 11.8 seconds in CNG mode. Publications quote the power as 110 bhp, 111 PS or 112 PS; all convert from the same 82 kW.

Gearbox

The ZNG comes only with a 6-speed manual. Mahindra has not announced an automatic CNG version.

Mileage (km/kg)

24.7 km/kg (certified, per Mahindra). Real-world figures depend on traffic, load and driving style, and independent tests are not out yet. At about Rs 87 per kg (a recent Delhi price quoted by V3Cars), 24.7 km/kg works out to roughly Rs 3.5 per km. See the Mahindra XUV 3XO product page for all variants.

CNG tank

Two CNG cylinders sit beneath the luggage area, with 60 litres (water equivalent) of total CNG capacity and a separate 42-litre petrol tank. This gives a flat loading floor and 270 litres of boot space (ISO V215), against 364 litres on the regular XUV 3XO, and the spare wheel stays mounted under the body. The car also has an NGV fast-filling valve, automatic switching to petrol when CNG runs low, and gas-leak detection that switches to petrol if a leak is sensed. Some outlets describe the cylinders as "in the boot"; Mahindra's own description is under the luggage floor.

FAQs

What is the power output of the XUV 3XO CNG?

82 kW (about 110 bhp) and 200Nm in both CNG and petrol modes, according to Mahindra.

What is the XUV 3XO CNG mileage?

Mahindra quotes a certified 24.7 km/kg. Real-world figures will differ and independent tests are not out yet.

Why doesn't the 131hp TGDi engine get CNG?

Direct-injection engines are more complex and expensive to adapt for CNG, so Mahindra uses the 1.2-litre MPFI-based TCMPFi engine for the ZNG.
