The Maruti e Vitara safety rating is in the news again. In India, the electric SUV has 5 stars from Bharat NCAP. But on 20 October 2026, Japan NCAP gave the same car 4 stars. Euro NCAP and ANCAP also gave it 4 stars. So which one should you trust? Here is a simple look at what each test found.
Every e Vitara is built at Suzuki's plant in Gujarat. Cars from this plant go to Japan, Europe and other markets. So it is mostly the same car, tested in different ways.
e Vitara safety ratings at a glance
| Test body | Result date | Stars | Adult safety | Child safety |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Bharat NCAP (India) | December 2025 | 5 stars | 31.49 out of 32 | 43 out of 49 |
| Euro NCAP (Europe) | September 2025 | 4 stars | 77 percent (31.0 out of 40) | 85 percent (42 out of 49) |
| ANCAP (Australia, New Zealand) | April 2026 | 4 stars | 77 percent (31.00 out of 40) | 87 percent (43 out of 49) |
| Japan NCAP | 20 October 2026 | 4 stars | Crash safety: Rank B | Crash avoidance tech: Rank A |
What is the e Vitara safety rating in India?
Bharat NCAP tested the top Alpha 61 kWh version. The result came out in December 2025. The e Vitara scored 31.49 out of 32 for adults. It scored 43 out of 49 for kids. That gave it 5 stars for both.
In the front crash test, it scored 15.49 out of 16. In the side crash test, it got full marks. It also passed the side pole test. The 5 star rating covers all three variants. These are the Delta, Zeta and Alpha.
Every e Vitara sold in India gets 7 airbags. One of them is a knee airbag for the driver. ESP, ABS with EBD, hill hold and seat belt reminders for all seats are also standard.
What did Japan NCAP find?
Japan's transport ministry and NASVA shared the result on 20 October 2026. It was the first car tested under Japan's new 2026 rules. It got an A rank for crash avoidance tech. It got a B rank for crash safety. Put together, that is 4 out of 5 stars.
Japan grades each test from Level 1 to Level 5. Level 5 is the best. The e Vitara got Level 5 for braking for people on foot, by day and at night. It got Level 5 for braking for cyclists and for lane keeping too.
The weak spots were at road crossings. When another car came across its path at a crossing, it got only Level 2. When it turned across the path of an oncoming motorcycle, it got Level 3.
| Japan NCAP test | Level (out of 5) |
|---|---|
| Braking for people on foot, day and night | Level 5 |
| Braking for cyclists | Level 5 |
| Lane keeping | Level 5 |
| Braking for a car crossing at a junction | Level 2 |
| Braking for an oncoming motorcycle while turning | Level 3 |
| Full front crash, driver and rear seat | Level 5 and Level 4 |
| New offset front crash | Level 4 |
| Side crash | Level 5 |
| Head safety for people on foot | Level 3 |
In the crash tests, head safety for people on foot got only Level 3. Japan has not shared the total points yet. So no one can say which single test cost it the fifth star.
Why did Euro NCAP and ANCAP give it 4 stars?
Euro NCAP tested the e Vitara in 2025. It scored 77 percent for adults and 85 percent for kids. One weak area was the full width front crash. In this test, the whole nose of the car hits a solid wall.
Euro NCAP rated head safety for the rear passenger as marginal in this test. Chest safety was also marginal. It said the dummy readings were not harmful, but the head moved too far forward.
There was one more issue. The e Vitara has no centre airbag. This airbag sits between the two front seats. It stops the driver and the front passenger from hitting each other in a side crash. Euro NCAP marked this area as marginal too.
ANCAP, which rates cars for Australia and New Zealand, gave it 4 stars in April 2026. Its scores are almost the same.
Is Bharat NCAP easier than Euro NCAP?
It is not about easy or hard. The tests are just different. The Bharat NCAP report for the e Vitara lists three crash tests for adults. These are a front offset crash, a side crash and a side pole crash. It does not list a full width crash. It has no braking test either.
Euro NCAP and Japan NCAP check more things. They run the full width crash. They test safety for people on foot. They also test if the car can brake by itself to stop a crash. A car can ace a short list of tests and drop points in a longer one. That is what happened here.
So the 5 stars in India are real. The 4 stars abroad just show the few places where it is not perfect.
Which e Vitara variant gets ADAS and AEB in India?
This part matters most for buyers in India. In Japan, Suzuki fits automatic emergency braking, or AEB, to every e Vitara. In India, only the top Alpha gets it. The Delta and Zeta also miss out on lane keep assist, adaptive cruise control and blind spot monitor.
| Variant | Battery | Ex-showroom price | 7 airbags | AEB and Level 2 ADAS | 360 camera |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Delta | 49 kWh | ₹16.19 lakh | Yes | No | No |
| Zeta | 61 kWh | ₹17.94 lakh | Yes | No | No |
| Alpha | 61 kWh | ₹19.99 lakh | Yes | Yes | Yes |
| Alpha Dual Tone | 61 kWh | ₹20.21 lakh | Yes | Yes | Yes |
The Alpha costs ₹2.05 lakh more than the Zeta. That money also gets you other extras. If you drive a lot on highways, the Alpha is the safer pick. You can also buy the e Vitara with Battery as a Service. Then it starts at ₹10.99 lakh, and you pay ₹3.99 per km for the battery.
Is the Maruti e Vitara safe to buy?
Yes, it is a safe car. It got full marks in India's side crash test. Every version has 7 airbags and ESP. Tests abroad rate it well for kids too.
But it is not perfect. If you want the most safety, pick the Alpha with ADAS. And make sure everyone wears a seat belt, even in the back.
