The WagonR facelift 2026 is one of the most awaited small car updates in India. So when Suzuki showed a new WagonR in Japan, many buyers got excited. Some reports called it a new generation car with a 37 kmpl hybrid. We checked Suzuki's own Japan website and spec sheet. Here is what is true, and what India will really get.

Is the new WagonR in Japan a new generation car?

No. Suzuki Japan's own WagonR page lists six generations so far. The car you see in the new video is the sixth generation, which first came out in 2017. It got a big update on 15 December 2025. Suzuki calls it a partial change, not a new model.

On 14 October 2026, Suzuki Japan posted a one minute ad film on its official YouTube channel. It shows a girl growing up with every WagonR, from the first one of 1993 to today's car. The ad went viral, and that is why the car is in the news again. You can watch it below.

What is new in the Japanese WagonR?

The front is all new. Every version now uses one face, based on the old Custom Z model. It has a large chrome grille, slim lamps and a new bumper. There are two new colours too, Velvet Dark Red Pearl and Lucent Beige Pearl Metallic.

Safety got the biggest push. Suzuki added Dual Sensor Brake Support II. It uses a camera and a radar. It can brake for people, cyclists and cars at road crossings. Lane departure control and a 4.2 inch colour display are now standard. The car also offers adaptive cruise control.

The top HYBRID ZX gets 6 airbags, a heated steering wheel and the option of a 360 degree camera. The base ZL gets 2 airbags. Suzuki also added special glue in the body to cut noise and improve the ride.

New WagonR Japan engine and mileage

Here is where many reports went wrong. Suzuki's official spec sheet shows a small 657 cc, 3 cylinder petrol engine. It makes 49 PS and 58 Nm. The HYBRID ZX adds a small motor of 2.6 PS and 40 Nm. This is a mild hybrid, not a strong hybrid. There is no turbo version now.

The best official mileage is 25.1 km per litre on the WLTC test. On the older JC08 test, the hybrid gets 30.9 km per litre. Suzuki has not shown a 37 kmpl figure anywhere. So treat that number as a rumour for now.

Why India will not get the Japanese WagonR

The Japanese WagonR is a kei car. Japan gives tax breaks to tiny cars, but they must stay under 3.4 metres long and 660 cc. That is why it is shorter and narrower than our WagonR, and it seats only four people.

The Indian WagonR is a different and bigger car. It was made for our roads, our families and our fuel prices. It also needs to cost much less. In Japan the base ZL starts at 1,457,500 yen with tax. That is about ₹8.8 lakh. The HYBRID ZX starts at 1,736,900 yen, or about ₹10.5 lakh. Our WagonR starts at ₹4.98 lakh.

WagonR facelift 2026: what will change in India

Maruti has not shared any details yet. But test cars have been seen on Indian roads since September. Going by the spy shots, here is what we expect.

The tall-boy shape will stay. The grille, front bumper and headlamp design are expected to change. The rear bumper may get upright reflectors. The tail lamps look the same. Inside, a bigger touchscreen is likely.

The biggest change could be under the bonnet. The 1.0 litre petrol and CNG should stay. But the 1.2 litre 4 cylinder engine may go. In its place could come the new 1.2 litre Z12E engine. This 3 cylinder unit is already in the Swift and Dzire. The CNG model may also get a tank under the floor. That would free up boot space, like on the Brezza 2026.

Item WagonR facelift 2026 (expected) Status
Design New grille, bumpers and headlamp detail Expected, from spy shots
Engines 1.0 litre petrol and CNG, 1.2 litre Z12E 3 cylinder Expected
CNG tank Under the floor, more boot space Expected
Touchscreen Bigger than today's 7 inch unit Expected
Launch Around December 2026 Reported, not confirmed
Price Slightly more than today TBA

WagonR facelift launch date and expected price

Reports say the facelift could come around December 2026. Maruti has not confirmed a date. The current WagonR costs ₹4.98 lakh to about ₹6.97 lakh, ex-showroom. The new one may cost a little more because of the new engine and features. The final price is not out yet.

Should you buy the WagonR now or wait?

If you need a car this Diwali, the current WagonR is still a good buy. It has 6 airbags, a big cabin and great CNG mileage. You may also get a festive discount on it.

If you can wait two or three months, waiting makes sense. The new engine could give better mileage. The new CNG tank could give you more boot space. Compare both once the prices are out.
